THE HWY 70 CONNECTOR: December Edition

Dear Neighbor,

Thank you for taking the time to read our latest newsletter. This edition aims to provide you with insights and information on everything we're doing to serve you, both in Raleigh and at-home in Lenoir, Jones, and Greene counties. Thank you for your continued support and prayers. As always, please let me know if our office can be of any assistance to you.

At your service,

Chris Humphrey

State Representative

Funding for Lenoir Community College

This session, Senator Jim Perry and I joined together to secure $11 million in state funding for capital projects at Lenoir Community College. It was an honor to present a ceremonial check on behalf of the General Assembly to LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt; Cale Grady, chair of the LCC Foundation Board of Directors; and Randy Smith, chair of the LCC Board of Trustees. This funding will provide a direct public benefit as we further strengthen the educational opportunities in our region.

Campaign Kick-off in Jones County

Thank you to all of our friends from across Eastern NC who came out to our re-election campaign kick-off event in Jones County. We’re encouraged by all of the support and look forward to earning your vote in 2024. Together, we will make North Carolina the best place to live, work, and raise a family.

Welcome Lenoir Commissioner Keith King

It was an honor to attend the swearing-in of Lenoir Commissioner Keith King, who was nominated by the Lenoir County Republican Party to fulfill the vacant term going until November 2024.

Keith King is a Kinston native who has served Lenoir County in a multitude of positions, including nine years on the Board of Education. I look forward to continued partnership with Commissioner King and the rest of the board as we work together to make our region the best place to live, work, and raise a family.

2023 Maysville Christmas Parade

We were honored to participate in the Maysville North Carolina Christmas Parade along with Jones County Sheriff Matt Wineman and Maysville Mayor Sayland. It was an honor to spend some time with these local leaders, and I look forward to our continued collaboration.

Official Start of Campaign Season

I’ve officially filed my Notice of Candidacy to run for re-election in House District 12. We’ll continue working hard on the campaign trail to connect with voters across Lenoir, Greene, and Jones counties to share our message and learn more about the issues that matter most to our community.

Senator Harry Brown Highway

I had the honor and privilege of attending a highway dedication ceremony in Jones County, honoring former Senator Harry Brown — who honorably served in the North Carolina Senate for 16 years, retiring as Majority Leader in 2021. Senator Brown has been a wonderful leader, colleague, and friend. We’re all grateful for his service to our state.

Reopening of Maysville's Water Plant

We recently celebrated the reopening of the Town of Maysville’s water plant along with NC Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Elizabeth Biser, Mayor Wayne Sayland, Town Manager Schumata Brown, and other town and county leaders, along with representatives from the offices of Congressman Greg Murphy, MD, Senator Thom Tillis, Senator Richard Burr, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Using state funding to implement a state-of-the-art filtration system and establish a new well, the Town has been an exceptional steward of their natural resources to ensure clean and safe drinking water for their citizens. I’m proud of the work that has been done and look forward to continued collaboration with local leaders.

Legislative Update for Jones County

Senator Brent Jackson and I recently had the honor of providing a legislative update to the Jones County Board of Commissioners and other local officials. We were delighted to present a ceremonial check to Jones County, representing the more than $19 million in state funding that has been appropriated directly to Jones County for various capital projects that will benefit our entire region. Thank you to Chairman Frank Emory and the other county & town officials for having us.

2nd Annual Taste of Greene County

We had an amazing time at The Barn at Nooherooka for the 2nd Annual Taste of Greene event, hosted by the Greene County Chamber of Commerce. We enjoyed food from Greene County’s favorite restaurants, live entertainment, a silent auction, and great fellowship with the community. Thank you to everyone who joined us to support our local business community.

Funding for La Grange Arts Council

I'm proud to have partnered with Senator Jim Perry to secure funding in the state budget for the La Grange Arts Council's renovation initiative. This project aims to enhance their facilities and expand the Council's capacity to serve the community through various artistic programs and events.

Investing in the arts is an investment in the heart of our community. The La Grange Arts Council has been a cornerstone of cultural expression in Lenoir County, and we are proud to support their efforts to create an even more vibrant and accessible space for residents to engage with the arts.

Visit to Industries for the Blind in Kinston, NC

We recently visited the facilities of Lions Industries for the Blind in Kinston, NC. This great organization provides employment opportunities for non-sighted persons in a work setting that affords both income and dignity to the individual, with no compromise on the quality of the product. Their work benefits everyone from local businesses to the U.S. military and local governments — providing high quality products like hats, t-shirts, name badges, etc. Thank you to Mark and Sharon for arranging our tour. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing first-hand the amazing work this organization does for our community and our nation.
